Wimbledon Stadium, Plough Lane, Wimbledon, London SW17
The jewel of the South, Wimbledon, sadly closed it's doors to oval racing on 26th March 2017 in front of a packed house. Presenting racing for six decades, the Plough Lane venue was a much loved Grand Old Lady of Oval racing and was at one stage the heart of Spedeworth . Whilst redevelopment has been mooted for many years particularly with land value and declining Greyhound Racing it did outlive tracks such as New Cross, Walthamstow,Harringay,Hackney and Crayford to become for many years the sole oval racing track within London and was much loved offering a huge atmosphere on the big occasion. The site is earmarked for Wimbledon Dons FC albeit last minute appeals to retain it as a Heritage site continue - who knows, as unlikely as it seems, whether Plough Lane will once again enjoy the vibrancy of Oval Racing - A very sad end to an illustrious heritage for oval racing in the capital.
